Former Union Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh (74) passed away on Sunday after he was critically ill and was kept on ventilator.

Singh, who is considered the brain behind National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MNREGA), was undergoing treatment at Delhi’s AIIMS for a week. He was being treated after developing post-COVID-19 complications.

Often called the architect of the MNREGA scheme, Singh is credited for guiding the job guarantee scheme despite troubled financial waters. The scheme was floated while he was the union minister for rural development.

Considered to be a close aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, Raghuvansh Prasad resigned as the party vice-president in June and had quit from the primary membership on September 10 this year.
