Bengaluru reports first case of COVID-19 reinfection as 27-year-old woman tests positive again

Karnataka has reported the first case of COVID-19 reinfection as a 27-year-old woman, who recovered from the disease in July, has contracted the virus again as per a statement by citys Fortis Hospital.

NDTV quoted Dr Pratik Patil, an Infectious Diseases Consultant at Fortis Hospital as saying, Normally, in case of infection, the COVID-19 Immunoglobulin G antibody test comes positive after 2-3 weeks of infection (showing that the patient has developed COVID-19 fighting cells). However, in this patient, the antibody test has come out negative, which means she did not develop immunity after first infection.

Another possibility is that the IgG antibodies disappeared in her body within a month, which left her susceptible to reinfection. Reinfection cases mean that the antibodies may not be produced by every individual and if they develop, they might not last a longer period, allowing the virus to enter the body and cause the disease again, Dr Patil added.

Meanwhile, India now recorded 90,802 new cases on Sunday taking its COVID-19 tally beyond 42 lakh, thereby making it the second most affected country after USA.

On Sunday, the total number of active COVID-19 cases in India stood at 8,82,542 with the recovery rate being 77.30 %.
