₹57 minor girls at Kanpur shelter home test COVID-19 positive, 5 girls found pregnant

Fifty-seven minor girls at a state-run childrens shelter home in Uttar Pradeshs Kanpur have tested positive for COVID-19 with five of them found to be pregnant. After the news about the massive infection at the shelter home spread, UP administration officials said that the pregnancies began before the lockdown and as of now the shelter home has been sealed with its staff quarantined.

Brahma Deo Ram Tiwari, District Magistrate, Kanpur, said that there were seven pregnant girls living at the shelter home and five of them had tested positive for Coronavirus. Tiwari said that minor girls were already pregnant when they were brought to the shelter home on the recommendation of child welfare committees in different districts. To gather more information on this matter, investigation under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act is going on in all these seven cases.
Kanpurs Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar told The Print: Many are spreading rumours that these girls got pregnant while at the shelter home, which absolutely false. Kumar added, Due to the shelter being sealed, the authorities couldn’t locate the documents but when we get them it will be clear since when these girls have been pregnant. We will also be able to find who came and went in the last two months and how it resulted in the spread of the virus.
UP Womens Commission member Poonam Kapoor while addressing the media claimed that few staff members of the shelter home had visited Kanpurs Hallet Hospital (now known as Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital/GSVM Medical College), which turned out to be the prime source of the COVID-19 spread.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi slammed the authorities as she wrote on Twitter: The case at the shelter home in Muzaffarpur (Bihar) is in front of the country. A similar case also emerged in UPs Deoria. So, for another such case to emerge shows that in the name of probes, everything is suppressed. But there are many inhuman incidents happening at state-run child shelter homes.
