In a shocking case, a 17-year-old boy from Punjab reportedly spent his parents savings of Rs 16 lakh on the popular game Player Unknowns Battlegrounds better known as PUBG. The Kharar-based teenager allegedly purchased virtual ammunition, passes and artillery to master the game within the span of a month.

According to his parents, the teenager had told them that he had been using mobile excessively for his online studies. The boy had reportedly access to three family bank accounts, which he used to upgrade his game profile, for in-app purchases and for his team-mates as well. His parents learnt about the transactions from their bank statements.

The teenagers father is a government employee with a long medical history. He had saved the money for his medical expenses and his sons future. The boy also used money from his mother’s PF account. The father told a daily: During the lockdown, I was staying at the place of my posting, while my son was staying with my wife here. He used her mobile phone to make all transactions and would delete the message regarding amount debited from the account.

He further said that his son had access to all account details since he used to make online payments for his mother’s kitty party. He spent around Rs 2 lakh of his mother’s Provident Fund (PF) amount, which she had transferred to the bank account recently. I had kept some amount in his personal account and a majority of the amount was in my non-salaried savings account. All of it was gone in no time, the father added. The boy also shuffled money from one account to another to avoid raising doubts about the bank accounts nil balance.

After the incident, the teenager is being made to work at a scooter repair shop by his father. His father said that he could not let his son sit idle at home and could not give him a mobile phone even for studying. He is working at a scooter repair shop so that he realises how hard it is to earn money. I am hopeless now as the money was saved for my sons future, the father said.

A statement by the newly-appointed IIT Mandi director Laxmidhar Behera claiming that ghosts exists and that he has gotten ‘rid of evil spirits’ through chants has sparked a controversy.

In a five minute YouTube video clip, which has now been made private, Behera recounts how he had travelled to Chennai in 1993 to help a friend who was in distress as his family was ‘affected by ghosts.’ In the video, he is heard saying that he had started ‘practising the thoughts and wisdom in the Bhagavad Gita’ along with chanting the Hare Rama Hare Krishna? mantra and had decided to help his friend to ‘demonstrate the potency of the holy name.’

Recalling the incident, Behera added in the clip: “So I took two of my friends and reached at 7 pm. He was in a research scholar apartment. After 10-15 minutes of loud chanting we suddenly saw his father, who was a very short person, absolutely old, barely able to walk, and suddenly his hand and leg washe was creating such a ghastly dance and his head is almost touching the roof. You could feel that he is being completely devoured by the evil spirit.”

Behera also claimed that the mother and wife of the friend were later ‘possessed by the evil spirit.’ It took them around 45 minutes to an hour of loud chanting to ward off the ‘evil spirit.’

When The Indian Express asked Behera about the video, he said, “I narrated what I said. Ghosts exist, yes.” while adding that modern science cannot explain a lot of occurrences or events.

As per reports, Behera was previously a professor at IIT Kanpur in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His specialisations include robotics and artificial intelligence. He has completed 30 projects, has 307 publications, and 2,612 citations. He was earlier heading the Intelligent Systems and Control Laboratory at IIT Kanpur. He has been associated with IIT Kanpur since 2001, before which he was associated with BITS-Pilani and REC-Rourkela.
