Shah Rukh was always my first choice for Pardes: Subhash Ghai

The Bollywood Blockbuster film ‘Pardes’, starring Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan and Mahima Chaudhry released in 1997. And we hear it was a tough call for showman Subhash Ghai to find the perfect faces for this superhit! Today, on Shah Ruk Khan’s birthday, we bring you some insights about ‘Pardes’ and more from filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s recent interview on completion of 25 years of the film.

Subhash Ghai and Shah Rukh Khan is a still from ‘Pardes’

Recalling what difficulties he went through in getting the right faces for ‘Pardes’, he revealed, “To be frank, the casting of the film was the biggest hurdle I had faced back then and a lot of discussion went into it to see who fits the bill. But the character of Arjun was written keeping Shah Rukh in mind. Hence, casting him was obvious and in my mind from day one. He was making waves in the industry that time, so I got him on board immediately. He fitted the role just perfectly.”

The filmmaker goes on to add, “I had first narrated the script of ‘Pardes’ to Madhuri Dixit and she even liked it. But, Mahima, who was a newcomer then, eventually bagged the role. I had to face many hurdles from the distributors of the film. They wanted ‘big faces’ on screen instead of Mahima and Apoorva Agnihotri, who played Ganga and Rajiv. However, Shah Rukh, who played Arjun, was a savior to convince distributors.”

Talking about how he convinced the distributors, Subhash Ghai elaborates, “As per the script, the characters of Ganga and Rajiv (played by Mahima and Apoorva) had to be new faces. And they both were perfect for the roles, but the distributors were hell-bent on having bigger names. They wanted ‘Pardes’ to be a bigger project like ‘Trimurti’ and my other previous films. I told them clearly – ‘I am making a film, not a project. I want to be sincere with what I want to portray.’ Finally, when the distributors saw the film, they agreed to my point. Pardes went on to become a blockbuster, Mahima won awards for the film too and I received some awards for the screenplay as well. So everything was just perfect!”

Jatin and Lalit Pandit have many hits to their credit together. Be it ‘Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander’, ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ among others. But, the duo parted ways in 2006 after their last composition for Aamir Khan’s ‘Fanaa’.

When Jatin was questioned about having a reunion with Lalit through a concert, Jatin revealed, “It was not my decision to part ways, hence I’m not responsible for it. I’m always ready for a reunion, I even approached Lalit for reconciliation, but he isn’t ready. I’ve been refused so many times that now I’ve stopped saying. It’s okay, I respect everyone’s privacy.”

The music composer who misses composing with Lalit, added, “It’s not easy to forget a partnership, because you go through a lot of emotions with your ‘working partner’. Be it any achievement, success, failure, good or bad, all the emotions are lived together. So, obviously, I miss my partner. But, things can be resolved only when one is willing to sit and talk about the matter. Otherwise, nothing can happen.”

Moreover, Jatin feels sad that even his brother, Lalit’s kids don’t talk to him. “I never felt bad when Lalit hosted events and had my name associated with it. Lalit never reached out to me even when he was performing our compositions somewhere. It saddens me the most that the children of my brother don’t come and talk to me,” said Jatin.

Actress-turned-author Twinkle Khanna went down the memory lane by posting a video on her social media page on Children’s Day. Opening about her childhood days, Twinkle revealed how she followed a balloon seller on the streets of Mumbai.

Twinkle wrote in her post, “An apocryphal tale around my childhood states that as a tiny toy in what was then called Cadbury Academy, I followed a balloon man out of the gate of the nursery. I was spotted on Linking Road, still following the balloon man, by my aunt’s hairdresser, Lucy and brought back home. It seems slightly unbelievable. How could I walk so much? What are the chances of Lucy seeing me on the street?”

The author recorded this video when she had gone out to get balloons for her daughter, Nitara’s birthday. She added in her caption and wrote, “But memory is a strange thing. Because I have heard this so many times, regardless of what really happened, I can see myself outside a particular shop on Linking Road. I have an image in my head of walking on that particular pavement and yes, I can see a wiry balloon man striding ahead of me. I hope the day I got these balloons for my daughter’s birthday, no one followed me.” she also added.
