Roger Binny as next BCCI chief?

The speculation about former Indian seamer Roger Binny, being in the fray for the top job started when his name appeared on the BCCI website.

Roger Binny

The speculation about former Indian seamer Roger Binny, being in the fray for the top job in Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started when his name appeared on the BCCI website, as part of the Draft Electoral Rolls for the October 18 elections, and as a representative of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

However, gauging by social media trends and news today, it looks like there was no smoke without fire and the player who was part of the 1983 World Cup winning team, is likely to be the next BCCI President replacing Sourav Ganguly, who became the BCCI president in October 2019 and whose tenure is coming to an end. Roger Binny had earlier served as a member of the BCCI selection committee and was a national selector too.

While the BCCI elections will be held in Mumbai in October and 18th is when we will know for sure, all the nominations will be scrutinized on October 13. Sources say that while Jay Shah is likely to remain the BCCI secretary, Rajeev Shukla might be the next BCCI vice-president. Sourav Ganguly’s name is being discussed as the next International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman.

World’s 1st 40,000-seater ‘transportable’ stadium that will be relocated to another country after FIFA World Cup!

Yes, you heard that right! 2022 FIFA World Cup that would begin in Qatar from November 20, would be held on world’s first ‘transportable’ stadium that would be relocated to another country post the mega event. It is being touted as the first ever detachable football stadium.

Spanish architecture firm Fenwick Iribarren Architects created Stadium 974 in Qatar, which is made entirely of colourful shipping containers and a modular steel structure. Its modular design blends recycled steel from the tower with repurposed shipping containers.

The 40,000-seat sports complex close to Doha’s port, formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud, is the first stadium in FIFA World Cup history to be completely demountable.

Fenwick Iribarren Architects collaborated with Schlaich Bergermann Partner and engineering firm Hilson Moran to create Stadium 974. After FIFA 2022, it will be disassembled and rebuilt in a new location.

The modular design of the stadium significantly decreased construction costs, build time, and material waste. According to the architects, water efficiency techniques assure that the stadium would use 40% less water than a typical stadium development.

The number of shipping containers utilised in its construction, 974, inspired the name of the stadium. Also, the country’s international dialling code is 974. The shipping containers pay tribute to Qatar’s nautical history and the industrial past of the location, many of which were utilised to bring building supplies to the venue.

Some of these steel containers have stairways, snack stands, and restrooms in addition to forming a section of the stadium’s parameter. Natural ventilation is made available by the stadium’s form and the spaces between the seats, negating the need for artificial cooling. The stadium’s proximity to the water helps with this.

Stadium 974 was created by Fenwick Iribarren Architects to receive the five-star certification in the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for both its construction and design, according to the Supreme Committee for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (SC).

The Middle East and North Africa are rated by GSAS for their green infrastructure and construction. A structure’s design, construction, and operation can all be certified; the highest possible rating is six stars.

On November 22, Mexico will play Poland; on November 24, Portugal will play Ghana; on November 26, holders France will play Denmark; and on November 28, Brazil will play Switzerland in the stadium.

Due to its proximity to Hamad International Airport, Stadium 974 would be the first stadium football that fans would see when they arrive in Qatar for the event. It is also the only stadium that is situated close to the sea.
