Pritish Nandy’s ‘spirit of Dharavi’ tweet sparks off poverty porn debate
Dharavi comments of former parliamentarian and noted media and television personality Pritish Nandy on Friday, kicked off a storm…

Dharavi
Is squalor for cameras, money more important than dignified living for the residents…
Former parliamentarian and noted media and television personality Pritish Nandy’s Dharavi comments kicked off a storm when he said on Twitter that Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slum, with an estimated population of 1 million, ‘is not actually a slum but a tribute to the great entrepreneurial spirit of the weakest and smallest person fighting for his or her livelihood in Mumbai. It is also a model in collective coexistence in one of the toughest cities in the world, where nothing else matters. Not caste. Not faith. Not where you come from. But trust and togetherness.’
While this may be true, what is equally true is the squalor and subhuman conditions that reign supreme in this slum. Netizens felt that Nandy, by romanticizing poverty in this manner, was only feeding poverty porn and tourism. Nandy clarified that he was seeking to keep the spirit of Dharavi alive by “researching the architectural grammar, the cultural history that builds integrated and interdependent societies like Dharavi that have survived and flourished over decades and make that the base for the new redevelopment plans. Not just look at the future but also build in the past.”
The Maharashtra Government had on November 29, opened the financial bids for Dharavi redevelopment project. While 3 companies Adani Realty, DLF and Naman Group had submitted bids, the Adani Group clinched the project with a INR 5,069-crore bid. The timeline for the entire redevelopment of Asia’s largest slum, with an estimated population of 1 million, might take close to 17 years, the rehabilitation of slum dwellers should be complete in seven years.
Fact. @gautam_adani has won the bid to redevelop Dharavi. What is crucial however is that the indomitable spirit of what has been often described as Asia’s biggest slum is retained and nurtured. Dharavi is not actually a slum. It is a tribute to the great entrepreneurial spirit

K’taka says boundary dispute closed chapter; CM Bommai accuses Sanjay Raut of acting like ‘Chinese agent’

CM Basavaraj Bommai speaks tough on Sanjay Raut, says he acting like “Chinese agent”
The Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue has been resonating in the winter sessions of both states’ legislatures, with both states accusing each other of stoking tensions, despite Union Home Minister Amit Shah intervening in the matter.
On Thursday, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution, saying that the boundary dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka is “a closed chapter.” The resolution declared that there was no question of compromising on issues related to “Karnataka’s land, water, and language, and the interests of Kannadigas.”
The Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that everyone was committed to initiating constitutional and legal measures to protect the state’s interests.
The CM said that people of both the States have lived cordially over the decades, he accused Maharashtra of trying to affect the cordial relations between people of both States by filing a petition before the Supreme Court in 2004, despite the matter being closed with the report of the Mahajan commission.

Sanjay Raut
Launching an attack on Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackery) MP Sanjay Raut for his remark that they would “invade” Karnataka on the lines of China invading India, Bommai said, “Sanjay Raut is an agent of China and is a traitor. If they attack China, we will push them back as the Indian Army does on our borders.” He even warned Raut of legal action and said that use of such uncivil language was shocking.
Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, backed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on the this issue.

Our morcha was ‘Fadnavis’ size, says Uddhav Thackeray

Devendra Fadnavis and Uddhav Thackeray
Former chief minister of Maharashtra and Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray is in Nagpur for the Maharashtra Assembly winter session. Though an MLC, he did not attend the Assembly but has been part of key Opposition strategy meetings.
Addressing media persons at the Radisson Blu hotel, Thackeray was asked to comment on the recent Maha Vikas Agadhi’s (MVA) protest march that was dubbed a “nano morcha” by Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. Taking potshots at Fadnavis’ weight, Thackeray replied to reporters’ queries saying, “ours was a Fadnavis-size morcha.”
The Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) Halla Bol rally was a 2.3 km long one which began near J J Hospital and concluded at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Uddhav Thackeray, NCP’s Ajit Pawar, state Congress president Nana Patole and MLA Aaditya Thackeray were notably present in the rally, which was organised to target the Eknath Shinde-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for “insulting remarks” on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, for their stand on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute and for projects being shifted out of Maharashtra.
While Thackeray said he will attend the session, reports say he flew back to Mumbai on Tuesday night.
