Representational image
As per the recent survey of Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, the entire month of January (all 31 days) in Nagpur this year saw tremendously high levels of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2).
The survey that released pictures of the same showed increased levels of SO2 and NO2 not just in Nagpur but in cities including Chandrapur, Gondia and Amravati. Environmental experts have said that the matter was worrying from the point of view of the health of the residents as the pollution index in Nagpur saw an increase in all the three months of winter.
Not just in January this year but 28 out of 30 days in November last year as well as 30 out of 31 days in December last year showed poor air quality. Environmental expert Professor Suresh Chopani said an action plan, to avoid respiratory issues, under National Clean Air Programme would be strictly implemented.

Video: As mercury dips, Nagpur looks no less than a hill station
Nagpur is looking no less than a hill station as the maximum temperature would hover at 28°C while minimum temperature is 8°C today. It is predicted to be maximum 29°C and minimum 9°C on January 10.
Mercury has plunged to sub-zero levels in upper reaches of the Himalayas. North India has been reeling under severe cold wave conditions.
As reported by TOI an India Meteorological Department official said, “Penetration of northerly wind (from western Himalayan region) over parts of Maharashtra is expected for a few days. We may see a drop in minimum temperature in some parts of Maharashtra during the next two to three days, after which the falling trend is likely to dissipate. An anticyclonic circulation is forming over north-west India, because of which the out-flow will be mainly north-westerly . We, therefore, expect to get cold winds from north India, causing a drop in night temperatures in the coming days.”
